Chiefly correspondence re Davis' employment in the production of iron, apparently at Coopersville Iron Works in Spartanburg District, and Maria L. Goddard Davis' thoughts and comparisons on life in the South written to family and friends in Worchester, Mass. Correspondence of James S.M. Davis discusses his contract with [William] Clarke to supervise approximately 100 men for two years, noting the few white workers, his difficulty in receiving payment, the financial difficulties of the company, his unsuccessful suit against the company; and problems of the hotel at Limestone Springs; other places represented include Cooper[s]ville [Iron Works], Susan Furnace, El[l]en Furnace, and Draytonville, S.C. Letters of Maria L. Goddard Davis written from Limestone Springs, S.C., to family in Massachusetts, discuss her opinions re the South; teaching at Limestone Springs Female High School; poor health and treatment with doses of calomel; thoughts on slavery; staunchly maintaining her abolitionist views while arguing that she depended upon slave labor; belief that many slaves fared better than poor whites; and her return to Worchester, Mass., for health reasons.
